Welcome to 1st Grade

Week of August 18, 2022 (Week 1)
Classroom Orientation

Students will be introduced to computer class. They will learn about our classroom procedures, where they sit, how to log on, how to log off, and where to find our educational (game) folder. If time permits, they will be introduced to Kidpix and asked to draw pictures of what they did this summer.

August 26, 2022 (Week 2)
Classroom Acclimation and Education.com (2 weeks)

We will review where each student sits, log on and log off procedures. We will also review where the education folder is. Students will be given time to play on their Education.com accounts so they can practice remembering our system.

They will log into individual accounts that have been created for each student so they may progress through the games at their own pace. There are over 300 games and activities to improve student's Math and Reading skill all of which are common core aligned.

Students will log into their own individual accounts each week. They will start out with the reading portion alternating every few weeks to the Math portion. We will start with the preschool skills just to review for the first few weeks. We will then move to the kindergarten skills once the students are comfortable with the game.

Students will be monitored on the progress and mastering of objectives. Software allows for teacher to view student's progress and mastering through report.

September 14, 2022 (week 4)
Internet Safety Unit and Internet Game (7 weeks)

We will view the Internet Safety Videos found at the Internet Safety for Kids (7:50),  NetSafe, Episode 1 (What is the Internet?) (2:30), NetSafe Episode 2 (What is personal information?) (2:22), NetSafe Episode 3 (Tell an Adult) (2:02), NetSafe Episode 4, (Be Kind to Other's Online) (1:57), Wild About Safety with Timon and Pumba (2:57), along with the Wild About Safety Video (1:52) sites together as a class.

Students will play Fishing with Phonics, level 1 on Professor Garfield's Island. We will log on together as a class and access the required game. We will move on to additional skills each week.

Consecutive weeks will be Fishing with Phonics, level 2, 3, & 4. We will move to StoryBook Reader and do Garfield in the Park first then Garfield and the beanstalk. Students will take the vocabulary and reading quizzes at the end of each story.

Students will be given time to play on their Education.com accounts so they can practice remembering our system.

 

October 21, 2021 (week 8)
Halloween Games Online


Students will play select games from my Halloween Game Page. Instructor will demonstrate the different games. They will observe how instructor goes from tab to tab accessing the different games. They will then have an opportunity to play them.

October 29, 2021 (week 9)
Printshop Thanksgiving Writing Prompt (2 weeks) 

Students will answer the 'I am thankful for...' writing prompt in the Printshop software. They will start by inserting a text box, typing the prompt and answering it. They will type their name in the text box once they are done with the sentence. They will insert a border for their project. They will save their project with their name to their desktop. They will retrieve their projects the second week and insert 2 pictures/ Student will print their project once they are finished. 

November 16, 2021 (week 10, day 5)
Thanksgiving Games Online


Students will play games from my Thanksgiving games page. The browser window will be open for the students along with 3 games in tabs for the students to navigate.

November 29, 2021 (week 11, day 5)
Kidpix, The true meaning of Christmas (2 weeks)

We will watch a short Story about St. Nicholas.

Students will access the Kidpix software. They will insert a text box and write 2 good sentences on what Christmas means to them (correct punctuation/capitalization). The first sentence will start with 'Christmas is' and include the true meaning of Christmas. The second sentence may be anything about Christmas. They will add their name to the project.

The second week they will retrieve their projects, and draw the true meaning of Christmas along with anything else they might like to add. We will print their projects.

January 3, 2023 (week 14, day 2)
Education.com (2 weeks)

 

Student will continue playing on their education.com games.

 

January 19, 2022 (week 16)

'Snowmail', learning about email 

(HDMI 3) on active panel, go to home, select either downloads or mail, select pencil tool)


Students will view an email on the Active board from Frosty. They will answer questions as a class regarding it while also filling in their own worksheet. They will address who wrote the email, who it is to, who it is cc-ed to, etc. Students will also review and use email related vocabulary.

January 27, 2022 (week 17)
Valentine’s Day Card using Print Shop 2 (2 weeks)


Students will use The Print Shop software to create Valentine's Day Cards for their parents. Instructor will demonstrate how to set up a blank, quarter-fold card. They will be shown how to use the different features of the software. Students will insert a border, a picture, and a text box with a greeting. They will save this with their name to the desktop.

They will open the project the second week of classes and work on the inside. They will insert a text box with 'I love you!' and one additional complete sentence, their first name, last initial and room number. They will print the projects the second week in time for Valentine’s Day. They will start the project the first week, save it to their desktops, retrieve it the following week, finish and print it

 

February 14, 2022 (week 19)
Hector’s World (4 weeks)


Students will watch one of the 6 Internet safety videos found at Hector's World at the start of the class.  The first unit will be 'Keeping your personal information safe'. This is split into 5 different ten minute videos. They will also view one on Cyberbullying and Computer Security weeks 6 & 7.

Week of March 23, 2022 (week 23)
Kidpix Easter Project (2 weeks)

Students will use the Kidpix software to create an Easter Project. They will start by inserting a text box and answering the "Easter is..." writing prompt with at least 5 words. Student's first name will also be inserted in the text box. Students need to spell the writing prompt correctly and use capital letters and punctuation. They will save their project with their first name and room number to their desktop.

The second week, students will retrieve, finish and print their projects the second week. The picture should pertain to the Resurrection of Jesus to some degree. They will print their project with the help of an instructor when they are finished.

 

Week of March 31, 2022 (week 24)
Easter Games Online


Students will play Internet Easter Games from Mrs Graber's website. Three games will be open in different tabs. Students will be shown how to navigate the tabs and play the different games.

April 8, 2022 (week 25)
Mother's Day Card (2 weeks)


Students will create a Mother's Day card using the Print Shop application. They will be shown how to access the program. They will select Greeting Cards from the project menu, start from scratch, quarter-fold tall, and start working on their card. They will personalize the card inserting pictures and text.

Students will start the outside page by inserting a border, will add a picture and a text box with 'Happy Mother's Day'. They will increase the font size, change the font color, and change the font style. They will save their projects with their names to their desktops.

The second week, they will move to the inside. They will insert a text box and write 2 good sentences to their mother. They will sign it with I love you and their name. They will print their project.

We will print the card together the second week to ensure correct printing.
 

May 6, 2022 (week 27)
Father's Day Card, Print Shop
(1 week)

Students will create a Father's Day card using the Print Shop application. They will be shown how to access the program. They will select Greeting Cards from the project menu, start from scratch, quarter-fold tall, and start working on their card. They will personalize the card inserting pictures and text.

Students will start the outside page by inserting a border, will add a picture and a text box with 'Happy Father's Day'. They will increase the font size, change the font color, and change the font style. They will save their projects with their names to their desktops.

The second week, they will move to the inside. They will insert a text box and write 2 good sentences to their father. They will sign it with I love you and their name. They will add at least one picture to their inside page. They will print their project with help.

Students will continue their adventure on the Brainzy accounts if they are done with the daily requirements.

Week of May 24, 2021 (week 28)
Kodable continued

Students will be learning the basics of coding using the Kodable website. They will click on the link below, enter their homerooms password, select their name and click on 'play'. There will be 4 different units taught for 3 weeks.

This was excellent. There is no log in but I used it for an entire class period with the students who finished the Kodable unit in 2 weeks. I then used it again from the start for all students for 1 more class period
